Common questions
How many words do I need in IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2?
Write at least 150 words for Task 1 and at least 250 words for Task 2. Shorter answers lose marks for task achievement or response.
How long should I spend on each task?
About 20 minutes on Task 1 and about 40 minutes on Task 2, within the 60 minutes of the Writing test.
Does the IELTS count hyphenated words and numbers as one word?
Examiners count words roughly as they appear: a hyphenated compound or a number counts as one word. The tool counts the same way.
