How to approach this problem and solution question

A problem and solution essay needs specific causes or problems first, then realistic solutions that match them.

  1. Introduce the issue and why it matters.
  2. Body 1: the main problems or causes, with examples.
  3. Body 2: solutions that clearly link to each problem, saying who should act.
  4. Conclude by summarising the best solution.

How to plan this answer

Structure

  1. Introduction: paraphrase the statement about private cars and state a clear thesis that answers both questions.
  2. Body paragraph 1: give two or three reasons why people prefer private cars, with an explanation for each.
  3. Body paragraph 2: suggest practical measures that would encourage public transport, linking each one to a reason given earlier.
  4. Body paragraph 3 (optional): use a real example, such as a city that has successfully expanded public transport, and evaluate its effect.
  5. Conclusion: restate your view briefly, summarise the main reasons and solutions, and avoid introducing new ideas.

Idea bank

  • Convenience: a car provides door-to-door travel, so people avoid transfers, waiting times and crowded platforms.
  • Flexibility: late shifts, school runs and shopping trips are easier to manage when you control the timing and route.
  • Solutions: dedicated bus lanes and integrated tickets that allow one fare across buses, trams and trains.
  • Parking and charging: park-and-ride schemes at the edge of the city, and higher parking charges or congestion charges in the centre.
  • Example: Bogota's TransMilenio bus rapid transit system, which uses dedicated lanes to move large numbers of passengers quickly.

Useful vocabulary

  • door-to-door: A car offers door-to-door travel, which buses rarely match in practice.
  • bus lanes: Dedicated bus lanes can make journeys faster and more reliable.
  • park-and-ride: Park-and-ride schemes allow commuters to leave their cars outside the city centre.
  • congestion charge: A congestion charge can discourage drivers from entering the busiest areas.
  • integrated ticketing: Integrated ticketing makes it easier to switch between buses and trains.
  • a reliable timetable: Many people will not switch unless they can rely on a timetable that is kept.
  • commute: A long commute by bus can be a strong reason to drive instead.
  • perceived safety: Perceived safety at night is a major factor for many passengers.
  • subsidise: Governments may subsidise fares to make public transport more affordable.

Common mistakes

  • Listing reasons for preferring cars without explaining why each one matters to the passenger.
  • Suggesting solutions that do not connect to the reasons given earlier in the essay.
  • Introducing new solutions in the conclusion, which weakens the coherence of the essay.
  • Answering only one of the two questions in the prompt.
  • Using an example without explaining what it shows about the solution.

Examiner tip: Address the two questions in separate body paragraphs, and link each solution to a reason you gave earlier so the essay stays coherent.
